The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) was established in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II and was part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at the University of Buda. It was the first institute in Europe, which issued engineering degrees to their candidates in geometric surveying, river control, and road construction. Today, more than 15 000 students are studying at the eight different faculties of the University. The Department of Agricultural Chemical Technology (ACT) was founded more than 90 years ago and always has had agro-industrial orientation. The department also plays an important role in the bioengineering education program. The key research activities at ACT are: applied and industrial microbiology, fermentation technology, waste water purification, cell cycle modeling, and bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials.
